Gavin Lux
Gavin Lux Bats leadoff Wednesday
Thu, May 15, 2025, 7:12 AM
Lux replaced the injured TJ Friedl (wrist) as the leadoff batter and went 2-for-4 with a double in Wednesday's 4-2 loss to the White Sox.
Analysis: Friedl was unavailable following a bone bruise he suffered during Tuesday's game. This was Lux's first time batting atop the order; he typically bats fourth or fifth. The double was Lux's 10th of the season, tying him for team high with Jose Trevino.
Will Benson
Will Benson Starts in center field
Thu, May 15, 2025, 6:46 AM
Benson started in center field and went 1-for-3 with a walk and a double in Wednesday's 4-2 loss to the White Sox.
Analysis: Benson started in place of the injured TJ Friedl, who was held out of the lineup with a wrist injury. Benson had been filling in for Jake Fraley (calf) in right field and is 3-for-11 with two doubles, a stolen base, an RBI and a run scored over four games since returning to the majors. Rece Hinds started in right field Wednesday.
Spencer Steer
Spencer Steer Pair of hits in loss
Wed, May 14, 2025, 10:40 PM
Steer went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and a double during Wednesday's 4-2 loss to the White Sox.
Analysis: Steer broke the Reds' scoring slump in the seventh inning by swatting a solo home run off Davis Martin. The long ball was Steer's fourth of the campaign. The 27-year-old also notched a double for a third straight contest. On the year, Steer is slashing .199/.271/.333 with 21 runs scored and 12 RBI.
Nick Lodolo
Nick Lodolo Yields three runs in loss
Wed, May 14, 2025, 10:32 PM
Lodolo (3-4) took the loss Wednesday against the White Sox, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts over 5.1 innings.
Analysis: Lodolo failed to complete six innings for the fourth time in his last six starts, getting pulled midway through the sixth frame after yielding a solo home run to Lenyn Sosa. During that six-start stretch, Lodolo is 1-3 with a 4.76 ERA and 34 strikeouts across 34.0 innings.. He's expected to make his next start Monday at Pittsburgh.
Tyler Stephenson
Tyler Stephenson Sitting Wednesday
Wed, May 14, 2025, 4:53 PM
Stephenson is not in the Reds' starting lineup against the White Sox on Wednesday.
Analysis: Stephenson will get a breather Wednesday after going 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in Tuesday's 5-1 loss to the White Sox. Jose Trevino will start behind the dish and bat sixth.
TJ Friedl
TJ Friedl Out with wrist bone bruise
Wed, May 14, 2025, 3:06 PM
Friedl is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the White Sox and has been diagnosed with a bone bruise in his right wrist, Charlie Goldsmith of the Dayton Daily News reports.
Analysis: Friedl suffered the injury when he fell hard on the wrist Tuesday against the White Sox following a collision with teammate Elly De La Cruz. He will test out how the wrist feels with a bat in his hands pregame, although it's not clear whether he will do any hitting. For now, Friedl is considered day-to-day. Will Benson is in center field and batting seventh for the Reds on Wednesday.
Chase Petty
Chase Petty Another start awaits
Wed, May 14, 2025, 10:49 AM
Petty is listed as the Reds' probable starting pitcher for Saturday's game against the Guardians in Cincinnati.
Analysis: After being called up from Triple-A Louisville last weekend, Petty made his second MLB start in a 6-0 loss to the Astros on Sunday, when he was charged with four earned runs on six hits and six walks over four innings. Though he now holds a 21.94 ERA and 3.94 WHIP through his first two big-league outings, Petty will nonetheless get a second straight turn through the rotation while the Reds are short on appealing alternatives following Hunter Greene's (groin) recent move to the injured list. Rhett Lowder (forearm) has made two rehab starts and could be ready to return from the IL by the end of the month, so Petty may be at risk of losing his spot with the big club if he continues to languish Saturday and in any other starts that might follow.
Emilio Pagan
Emilio Pagan Implodes in 10th inning
Wed, May 14, 2025, 8:03 AM
Pagan (0-2) took the loss Tuesday against the White Sox, allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits and a walk while striking out one in 1.2 innings.
Analysis: Pagan worked a scoreless ninth and came back out for the 10th to try and do the same. He got two quick outs to put himself in a favorable spot but couldn't quite seal the deal, as the White Sox walked, singled and homered to go up 5-1. Pagan has now given up a run in three of his last four outings and has just one save in his last five appearances. He needs one more save to reach double digits for the first time since 2019.
Andrew Abbott
Andrew Abbott Receives no run support
Wed, May 14, 2025, 7:53 AM
Abbott allowed one run on four hits and no walks while striking out seven in six innings Tuesday against the White Sox. He did not factor into the decision.
Analysis: Despite allowing just one run over six innings, Abbott exited on the hook for the loss after the Reds got blanked through eight innings. He posted his second quality start of the year and his fourth start of at least five innings. His command has been stellar of late, as he's posted a 15:0 K:BB in 11 innings over his last two starts. Abbott owns a 2.10 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 38:12 K:BB in 30 innings this season.
Elly De La Cruz
Elly De La Cruz Swats timely home run
Wed, May 14, 2025, 7:47 AM
De La Cruz went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's loss to the White Sox.
Analysis: De La Cruz led off the bottom of the ninth with a solo home run to tie the game. That's now two home runs in the last three games for De La Cruz, who had previously gone 18 straight games without leaving the yard. Tuesday marked just the third time in his last 13 games that De La Cruz did not strike out, as his above-average strikeout tendencies have carried over from prior seasons thus far.
TJ Friedl
TJ Friedl Fighting wrist soreness
Tue, May 13, 2025, 10:20 PM
Friedl exited Tuesday's game against the White Sox early due to right wrist soreness, Charlie Goldsmith of the Dayton Daily News reports.
Analysis: Friedl's wrist hit the ground hard after he collided with Elly De La Cruz in the outfield during the fourth inning, leading to Friedl's eventual removal in the fifth. X-rays on his wrist came back negative after the game, so he doesn't seem to be dealing with anything too serious. However, the Reds may elect to sit him down for a day or two, especially since the 29-year-old had also been hit in the left forearm by a pitch earlier in the game.
TJ Friedl
TJ Friedl Exits early Tuesday
Tue, May 13, 2025, 8:52 PM
Friedl was removed from Tuesday's game against the White Sox due to an apparent injury, Charlie Goldsmith of the Dayton Daily News reports.
Analysis: Friedl was hit by a pitch in the third inning of Tuesday's contest before colliding with Elly De La Cruz while chasing down a flyball in the fourth. He remained in the game following the collision but was replaced in the field to begin the fifth. It's possible his removal was simply a precaution to prevent his body from taking any more punishment, but the Reds should provide more details in the near future.
Santiago Espinal
Santiago Espinal Moves up to two hole
Tue, May 13, 2025, 2:36 PM
Espinal will start at third base and bat second in Tuesday's contest against the White Sox.
Analysis: Usual No. 2 hitter Matt McLain has been demoted to the No. 8 spot in the lineup. Espinal has hit second a handful of times this season but has made most of his starts much lower in the batting order, including hitting ninth in the Reds' previous game Sunday.
Matt McLain
Matt McLain Batting eighth Tuesday
Tue, May 13, 2025, 2:34 PM
McLain will start at second base and bat eighth in Tuesday's game versus the White Sox.
Analysis: McLain had occupied either the second spot (28 times) or leadoff spot (three times) in his first 31 starts this season, but with a .596 OPS and 31.7 percent strikeout rate, he's earned a trip to the lower third of the Reds' batting order. Santiago Espinal has been elevated to the two hole for Cincinnati.
Will Benson
Will Benson Uneven playing time
Tue, May 13, 2025, 1:56 PM
Benson is not in Tuesday's lineup against the White Sox.
Analysis: Benson has started two of four games since getting recalled, and while he started Saturday and Sunday, he's sitting out the first game against Chicago, even with righty Jonathan Cannon on the bump. The righty-hitting Connor Joe is starting in right field and batting ninth.
Rhett Lowder
Rhett Lowder Completes second rehab start
Mon, May 12, 2025, 8:38 AM
Lowder (forearm) gave up five runs (four earned) on five hits and one walk while striking out five over three innings in his rehab start Sunday with High-A Dayton.
Analysis: After covering three innings in his first rehab start in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League on Tuesday, Lowder shifted his assignment to the Midwest League for his second outing. Though he was capped at three innings once again, Lowder pushed up his pitch count to 63 (45 strikes). Lowder's final line wasn't especially impressive, though he was a victim of some bad luck on balls in play, as all five of the hits he allowed were singles. Lowder is likely to make at least one more start in the minors before the Reds decide whether he's ready to return from the 15-day injured list. Cincinnati could have a spot available in the rotation for Lowder once he's activated, as he might be viewed as an upgrade over Chase Petty for the No. 5 spot while the team waits for Hunter Greene (groin) to make his return from the IL.
Will Benson
Will Benson In lineup again
Mon, May 12, 2025, 7:13 AM
Benson started in right field and went 0-for-3 in Sunday's 6-0 loss to the Astros.
Analysis: Benson made a second consecutive start in right field since being called up at the end of last week. The lefty-hitting outfielder is filling in for the injured Jake Fraley (calf) but may be limited to starting against right-handers. Benson is 1-for-7 with a double and an RBI during his second stint this season in the majors.
Austin Hays
Austin Hays Serves as DH again
Mon, May 12, 2025, 7:10 AM
Hays went 0-for-4 in Sunday's 6-0 loss to Houston.
Analysis: Hays, who was given a rest day Saturday, returned to the lineup as the designated hitter. It was his second start since being activated off the injured list Friday, with both starts coming at DH. He's bounced between left field and DH, but with two leg injuries already this season, manager Terry Francona may manage him carefully and not expose him too much in the field. Hays has gotten off to a nice start, batting .328 with five home runs and 13 RBI through 16 games.
Wade Miley
Wade Miley Resumes rehab assignment
Mon, May 12, 2025, 7:01 AM
Miley (elbow) allowed three runs on three hits and struck out six over 2.2 innings in a rehab start at High-A Dayton on Saturday.
Analysis: Miley resumed his rehab assignment after experiencing groin discomfort during an outing at the same affiliate April 27. The more substantive injury, however, is the Tommy John left elbow surgery. Miley's thrown just 5.2 innings while on rehab and is expected to make a few more appearances before he's ready to be activated.
Ian Gibaut
Ian Gibaut Makes first rehab outing
Mon, May 12, 2025, 6:53 AM
Gibault (shoulder) struck out two over one inning for Triple-A Louisville on Sunday.
Analysis: Gibault landed on the 15-day injured list April 26 with a right shoulder impingement. The right-hander is expected to make multiple rehab appearances before the Reds activate him.
