Carson Spiers
Carson Spiers Goes 3.2 scoreless in rehab start
Mon, Jul 14, 2025, 2:38 PM
Spiers (shoulder) struck out five and gave up one hit and four walks over 3.2 scoreless innings in his rehab start for Triple-A Louisville on Sunday.
Analysis: Though Spiers kept Columbus off the board during his start, he spotted just 39 of his 72 pitches for strikes in the outing, which was the third of his rehab assignment. On the shelf since April 20 due to a right shoulder impingement, Spiers appears to be close to fully stretched out at this point, but the Reds don't seem to have an opening for him in the big-league rotation. Spiers could be activated from the 60-day injured list coming out of the All-Star break to serve as a long-relief option for the big club, or the Reds could option him to Triple-A if they want to keep him in a starting role.
Emilio Pagan
Emilio Pagan Locks down 20th save
Sun, Jul 13, 2025, 5:37 PM
Pagan picked up the save Sunday, striking out one in a perfect ninth inning to close out the 4-2 win over the Rockies.
Analysis: Pagan made quick work of Colorado in the final frame, needing only 14 pitches to retire the side in order and lock down his 20th save of the season. The veteran right-hander has now converted 20 of 23 save chances and has been especially effective lately, allowing only two earned runs over his last 15 appearances. Pagan continues to provide stability for Cincinnati while keeping his role as the team's preferred closer firmly intact.
Nick Martinez
Nick Martinez Bounces back with strong start
Sun, Jul 13, 2025, 5:00 PM
Martinez (7-9) earned the win Sunday, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk over 5.1 innings while striking out three in a 4-2 victory over the Rockies.
Analysis: Coming off his worst start of the season, Martinez rebounded with a more composed outing Sunday, retiring the first six Rockies he faced before allowing both his runs on a Mickey Moniak single in the third. Martinez managed to work into the sixth, where he departed after allowing a pair of baserunners. With this bounce-back performance, the right-hander now holds a 4.78 ERA, 1.21 WHIP with 76 strikeouts over 111 innings this season.
TJ Friedl
TJ Friedl Finds power stroke during win
Sun, Jul 13, 2025, 3:57 PM
Friedl went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, two additional runs scored and a walk in Sunday's 4-2 win over the Rockies.
Analysis: Friedl filled up the box score in a much-needed strong showing, opening the scoring with a leadoff home run, his first long ball since June 13. The 29-year-old had been quiet at the plate this month, entering Sunday just 7-for-38 (.184) with one RBI in the month of July. Despite the slump, Friedl remains locked into the top of Cincinnati's lineup and could carry momentum into the second half of the season after Sunday's encouraging performance.
Will Benson
Will Benson On bench against southpaw
Sun, Jul 13, 2025, 12:02 PM
Benson is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rockies.
Analysis: After starting in each of the Reds' last eight games, Benson will take a seat against southpaw Austin Gomber. Though Benson has been holding down a strong-side platoon role since the middle of May, he could be in danger of losing playing time versus righties after the Reds activated Jake Fraley from the injured list Saturday. Benson got the nod in right field Saturday over Fraley against Rockies righty Bradley Blalock, going 1-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and a run.
Gavin Lux
Gavin Lux Idle against southpaw
Sun, Jul 13, 2025, 11:59 AM
Lux is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rockies.
Analysis: With southpaw Austin Gomber on the mound for Colorado, the left-handed-hitting Lux will take a seat after he started in each of the Reds' last seven games. Lux will give up his spot in the lineup to Santiago Espinal, who starts at third base while Noelvi Marte serves as the Reds' designated hitter.
Jake Fraley
Jake Fraley Draws walk in return
Sun, Jul 13, 2025, 7:57 AM
Fraley (shoulder) drew a walk as a pinch hitter in Saturday's 4-3 win over the Rockies.
Analysis: Though the Reds faced a right-handed starter (Bradley Blalock) on Saturday, the left-handed-hitting Fraley wasn't included in the lineup in his first game back from the 10-day injured list. Instead of Fraley, the Reds went with another left-handed hitter in Will Benson in right field. The Reds face lefty Austin Gomber on Sunday, and manager Terry Francona could go with the right-handed-hitting Connor Joe in right field over Fraley and Benson.
Will Benson
Will Benson Records triple Saturday
Sun, Jul 13, 2025, 7:51 AM
Benson started in right field and went 1-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored in Saturday's 4-3 win over the Rockies.
Analysis: Benson's triple drove in a run, and he then scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth of Cincinnati's walk-off win. He remained in the starting nine against a right-hander (Bradley Blalock), despite the return of Jake Fraley (shoulder), who was activated off the injured list Saturday. Fraley has traditionally started against righties when healthy, and he could eventually overtake Benson as the Reds' preferred option at the position.
Brady Singer
Brady Singer Fans nine in no-decision
Sun, Jul 13, 2025, 3:32 AM
Singer did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing three runs on seven hits and one walk over 6.1 innings against the Rockies. He struck out nine.
Analysis: Singer worked around plenty of traffic Saturday but limited the damage to three runs before exiting. The right-hander has been serviceable, though unspectacular, in his first season with the Reds, carrying a 4.32 ERA and 1.35 WHIP across 100 innings in 19 starts.
Tyler Stephenson
Tyler Stephenson Sitting out Saturday
Sat, Jul 12, 2025, 12:43 PM
Stephenson is not in Saturday's lineup against the Rockies.
Analysis: Stephenson continues to alternate starts with Jose Trevino, with this being Stephenson's third absence in the last seven games. Trevino will hit eighth in the order Saturday.
Christian Encarnacion-Strand
Christian Encarnacion-Strand Demoted to minors
Sat, Jul 12, 2025, 11:00 AM
The Reds optioned Encarnacion-Strand to Triple-A Louisville on Saturday.
Analysis: Encarnacion-Strand has seen his playing time dwindle over the past several days, and Jake Fraley's (shoulder) return from the IL will now leave the former without a spot on the active roster. The 25-year-old infielder has slashed .208/.234/.377 across 137 plate appearances this season.
Jake Fraley
Jake Fraley Returns from IL
Sat, Jul 12, 2025, 10:56 AM
The Reds reinstated Fraley (shoulder) from the injured list Saturday.
Analysis: A partial tear of Fraley's right labrum has kept him sidelined since late June, but he's been cleared to return to the Reds after going 2-for-11 with a run scored during a three-game rehab assignment at Triple-A Louisville. The 30-year-old should reclaim his role as Cincinnati's primary right fielder against right-handers now that he's healthy. Christian Encarnacion-Strand was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move.
Ian Gibaut
Ian Gibaut Begins playing catch
Sat, Jul 12, 2025, 10:34 AM
Gibaut (shoulder) has started playing catch, MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Gibaut says he's feeling good again, but a targeted return date is unknown at this time. The right-handed reliever should take the usual steps -- bullpens, live batting practice and brief rehab assignment -- before rejoining the Reds.
Jake Fraley
Jake Fraley Ready for activation
Sat, Jul 12, 2025, 10:30 AM
Fraley (shoulder) completed a three-game rehab assignment and could be activated from the 10-day injured list this weekend, MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Fraley played three games for Triple-A Louisville from Tuesday through Thursday and reported no issues. He was given Friday off in preparation for a potential weekend return.
Noelvi Marte
Noelvi Marte Leaves the yard in loss
Fri, Jul 11, 2025, 9:10 PM
Marte went 2-for-3 with a double and a solo home run during Friday's 3-2 loss to the Reds.
Analysis: Marte delivered a great performance from the ninth spot in the batting order, scoring the first Reds run of the game with a homer in the third and setting the table for the team's second run with a double in the seventh, before being lifted in the eighth inning. It's been a small sample size so far, but the 23-year-old has impressed at the plate, slashing .295/.344/.545 with five doubles, a triple, five home runs and 21 RBI in 26 games played this season.
Chase Burns
Chase Burns Fans 10 in no-decision
Fri, Jul 11, 2025, 8:48 PM
Burns settled for a no-decision after working six innings, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out 10, during Friday's 3-2 loss to the Rockies.
Analysis: It's been a roller-coaster ride for Burns in the first four starts of his big-league career, but this was the sharpest he's looked so far. The rookie right-hander fanned 10, the first time he's eclipsed the double-digit mark. He did allow another home run, already the third one he's allowed, but the potential for the 22-year-old as a future ace was on full display. Burns enters the All-Star break with 25 strikeouts in just 16 innings as he looks to hold down his rotation spot in the second half.
Rhett Lowder
Rhett Lowder Still no baseball activity
Fri, Jul 11, 2025, 7:04 AM
Lowder (forearm/oblique) continues to rehab in Arizona but has not yet participated in more advanced baseball activity, MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Lowder endured elbow soreness and a forearm injury during spring training before an oblique injury paused his rehab assignment in May. The oblique is the issue now, and it threatens to scrap a year of development for the 23-year-old right-hander.
Wade Miley
Wade Miley Playing catch
Fri, Jul 11, 2025, 6:56 AM
Miley (forearm) is playing catch and could return at some point in 2025, MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Miley was rehabbing an elbow injury early this season and had a couple of encouraging starts before landing on the 15-day injured list with a left flexor strain. Even if the veteran southpaw does make it back from the IL late in the year, there may not be a spot for him in the Cincinnati rotation with Chase Burns having been called up and Hunter Greene (groin) likely healthy by then.
Nick Lodolo
Nick Lodolo Quiets Miami over six frames
Fri, Jul 11, 2025, 2:24 AM
Lodolo (6-6) notched the win Thursday against the Marlins, giving three hits and no walks in six scoreless innings. He struck out four.
Analysis: Lodolo scattered three singles while enjoying his fourth appearance of the season without allowing an earned run. The 27-year-old left-hander has worked at least six frames in 11 of his 19 outings this year, and each of those performances have been quality starts. He closes out the first half with a strong 3.38 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 97:22 K:BB over 106.2 inning.
Austin Hays
Austin Hays Plates three in multi-hit game
Thu, Jul 10, 2025, 9:57 PM
Hays went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a walk in Thursday's 6-0 win over Miami.
Analysis: It was Hays' first game with multiple hits and three RBI since June 30. Although the 30-year-old outfielder started against right-hander Cal Quantrill on Thursday, most of the former's playing time should come versus southpaws going forward. Hays is hitting .366 with one home run, six doubles, three triples and eight RBI over 41 at-bats against left-handed pitching, but he's batting a weaker .248 versus righties in 2025.
